720p on iMac G5

Hello,

I have a question regarding HD playback on my iMac G5 2.0 GHz.
I downloaded a movie in 720p x.264, but my mac seems unable to play it properly.

Apple says that you need a CPU of 1.8 GHz or faster to play back 720p h.264 content.

Is there a big difference in h.264 and x.264?

I downloaded som trailers in 720p from http://www.apple.com/trailers , and they play nice in QuickTime.

Is there any solution for playing back my file smoothly, like using another player, or is my computer simply too slow?

Thanks!

720p H.264 (which is exactly the same as x264; x264 is just an open source _encoder_ for the very same format) works nicely on my iMac G5. It noticeble, that the machine is under heavy load, but it still plays fluently.
Make sure that you enable at least "automatic" or even "highest" as CPU speed in the global preferences' energy saver section.

Every time i can i try the latest nightly version.
And i thank you a lot for your work.
But there is a problem in vlc to decode movie in 720/30p x264
i got a pc 3.0ghz and that work great with haali
x264 ffmpeg decoder is realy cpu intensive.
