I apologise if I have overlooked the issue on an earlier page but

I have just downloaded vlc 084 to see if I can watch region 1 dvd on my region 2 player Cannot do

My region 1 player will not play one movie..(The Celebration)

Can anyone help?

I'm having a similar problem. I've always been able to use VLC to view region-2 DVDs on my Region-1 mac (dual quad-core G5) but now, using the latest version of VLC, I'm not able to play region-2 dvd's anymore. Did something get skipped in the upgrade perhaps?

VLC didn't not change, but additionally to the region lock by the RPC2 firmwares (search this forum for details), recent OSX / QuickTime updates added further prevention mechanisms to let VLC only play DVDs from the same region as the drive is set to.
There is no a way for us to circumvent this. Furthermore, this isn't a priority for us, since developing such a feature would be illegal in most countries VLC's developers are from now.

I have noticed this also. If I am willing to delete Quicktime and use only VLC, do you have any idea which system files need to be deleted? BTW, this is not illegal (AFAIK) in my country (The Netherlands).

That's an easy one: you can't delete QuickTime. That's impossible (or if you still manage to do so, you'll get a really unstable OSX).
It's really built into OSX, so you won't see any images in most apps anymore, not talking about manipulating them. Preview for example, is completely useless without QT. It won't show anything and so will do almost all apps (except for GraphicConverter, GoogleEarth and some other exotes perhaps).

Additionally, that circumvention layer is probably (at least in parts) even more down in Darwin, I'd guess.

I have found a way to play other regions (I use a program called, I believe, DVD Image to create a disk image on my hard drive which is region free), however, as another solution, I thought I could install an older version of Quicktime since VLC was able to play foreign DVDs until recently.

Would you happen to know which version of Quicktime still permits VLC to play regardless of region?

This is yet another reason why the RIAA and MPAA have to be stopped. I'll stop buying DVDs, there's really no point in it since I can't play them where and how I want!

After some searching I eventually found out how you can do it. You need to copy the movie to your harddrive first, to do that you need an application called MacTheRipper which will ignore the region coding.
