How do I create video clips?

I've been trying to figure out how to create a video clip from a dvd all day. I only need a certain portion of the dvd, and I need to be able to save it somewhere so I can burn it onto a disc. I'm an artist and need to put this documentation of my work in my portfolio. In the simplest terms possible, can someone please help me? Please???

It is possible to extract certain chapters or tracks from a DVD, but that's really inconvinient with VLC. You should have a look at HandBrake. It's written by one of our developers and really suited for this purpose.
