Sorry, but why don't you just install the QuickTime Flip4Mac plugin and play your files with QuickTimePlayer (which is much better than WMP IMHO) without the hazzle of starting a virtual server, etc.?

Because flip4mac does NOT work for the intel mac's!!!! I thought VideoLAN would work after being told about it. Guess another file gets deleted off the mac now... and I get to write the person back and say.. Well you said it would work... and it doesn't!

Uh... yes they do.

1) You can run the current release version of Flip4Mac under Rosetta.
2) There's a semi-public beta of Flip4Mac for Intel Macs out since last week.
While the official sign-up and download is closed, do a bit of search and you
can locate a rogue download link without too much effort.

Seriously, man, WMP9 for Mac has to be run under Rosetta, too. I'd very
much recommend digging into the 2nd option.

Maybe the next version of VLC can play , because the ffmpeg team is working hard in VC-1 decoder.

Take a look at ffmpeg-devel mail list

I will praise you if I am finally able to play this Libby Hoeller video! That WMV3 codec is the bane of my existance. FYI, you can't play that codec even with flip4Mac.

Have you ever contacted the Flip4Mac guys about the problem? If you report about it, they usually come around to fixing it. WMP9 for Mac is fast becoming obsolete. Instead of clinging onto that clunky solution help something that's actively in development.

I've done what people said at this forum, but still does not work.
Perhaps my X86 machine.

Some other ideas about how to see fucXXXXX WMV files without using Windows MEdia 9?

Until VLC support WMV3 and/or Flip4Mac release an Intel version, your only choice are the Popwire WMV-9 Component.

ASF files converting

I bought this great new camera that said that it recorded in mp4 format, but unfortunately it records in asf format! Now I can only play it with the vlc player and cannot figure out how to convert it to a Quicktime movie or Avi or anything! (Note: I am running Mac OS X)

Does anyone know anything about converting asf files in macs? I have googled for days!

using the flip4mac plugin i can get QT to play wmv files just fine. HOWEVER, vlc insists on owning the file associations such that it tries (and fails) to open wmv3 files. any suggestions on how i can get .wmv extensions to open with QT?

(yes i've triend the get info trick, clicking on "change all" removes my selection of quicktime and defaults back to vlc, i've also tried a prefrence pane called "Default apps")

So is the ffmpeg team finally cracking the WMV3 nut? Or is VLC going to get the 'passthrough' support via Flip4Mac?

wesley. It will be using ffmpeg's VC-1 support.
Actually, the latest nigtly build already have WMV3 support. It might not be error free, but it works! :)

You find the PowerPC version here: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx/

Try removing Flip4Mac and reinstalling the new version, which came out just a few days ago. The new version is finally a universal binary!

Like I said before the new version of Flip4Mac is out now so grab it and give it a try. There are also some folks here in the forum reporting that the latest nightly build of VLC have the experimental WMV3 support enabled now

While I've heard of some reports that people are getting wmv3(avi container) files to play with the July 24th/29th nightly build, I am having no such luck. Guess it's back to the waiting game. :(

I'll give the new 31st nightly a shot and see what happens.

it's coming :D
it's been seen working, it just takes a while before all the patches trickle trough into the nightly build.

July 31st build doesn't work either. LOL

Ahh well... I've been waiting for 2 years (since I started using a Mac), what's another few months? :D
