If you're running a PPC Mac and downloaded the Intel version, this will happen.

my verson of vlc was working fine until this version came out.

It does still work fine, but as said you downloaded the variant for Intel-Macs, while you need the variant for PowerPC-Macs. You can get it on the Download for Mac OS X page on our official website.
