VLC vs. mplayer performance (PPC)

Postby haifischjunge » 24 Apr 2006 11:33

ive got a pb 1ghz, 768mb ram, running 10.4.6.

movies are h264 encoded video with 5.1 he-aac sound (encoded with nero).

most of the time the movies are viewable with vlc, however sometimes vlc crashes and forwarding is also impossible.

some days ago i found the new mplayer 1.0pre8rc5 (universal binary) which plays all h264 very smooth and with about 90 % cpu usage, even seeking was possible.

unfortunately the official mplayer site is not very clear about changelogs but as i understand mplayer also uses ffmpeg for h264 decoding.

are vlc and mplayer using different versions of ffmpeg or different libraries for aac decoding?

tried 0.8.5-test2 and 0.8.6svns, however found the 0.8.5-test3 worked best - however still a lot inferior to mplayer.

VLC uses non-optimized code if it's not a release. Also Mplayer is better at skipping frames. VLC hates it if the video cannot be decode on time.
