hi all

i've got a downloaded .avi of a bird flying that i am hoping to use to create a hand-drawn animation from. so far, it'll only play in vlc on my mac (os 10.4.6 with QT 7.0.4). i can't figure out how to get this to either pause then frame advance OR export to a format QT can play, so i can frame advance it then (or import it into flash, to work that way).

i have discovered that i can slow down the playback in vlc then export frame captures by hitting the space bar, but i don't know if i'm dropping frames when i use this method or not.

any suggestions?

How about just dumping all the frames of your movie to a folder as jpg/png files?
If you want to do that, go to Video -> output modules and switch from "Default" to "Image Video Output". You need to enable the advanced-box at the bottom of VLC's preferences to show this option.
You can set specific options about this video output in Video -> output modules -> image file.
Feel free to ask further questions, if necessary.

however, it isn't working.

in preferences i have the option to set the video images snapshot to png or jpg, and to set the directry for where they will save. and i can switch the output module to image video output as well.

BUT

under: preferences>video>output modules>image file i'm only offered png as the output option,no jpg - though the menu is long enough for ten options, there's only one listed. i use pngs all the time, so, i figured this'd be okay.

when i play the video, it does output one file with a png extension for each frame (in my documents folder, no way to specify where they will save, as far as i can tell) but i get the following error code:

ffmpeg: cannot find encoder PNG Image
main: no suitable encoder module for fourcc `png '.
VLC probably does not support this image format.

and they report as corrupt and unopenable by both review and photoshop.

is the image encoder downloadable?

Sorry, I forgot that this was broken in the last release.

Just download a current nightly build here. This will get you both the PNG encoder and the possibility to export to JPG plus other stuff which will officially be released by the end of the month.

Hi there,

Question is, if I install the renwed nightly version, do I have to uninstall the older version first, or if not, it is just to be installed over the old and will it overwrite all settings made prior to the new installation then?

P.S.: I have VLC installed on Win 2000 Pro. But I guess, the question stays the same, isn't it? Or should I ask it in the Windows subforum again?

You don't have to delete the old version. Just download the zipped package, unzip it and you're ready to go.
The stored settings of your old version should be kept and used by the new one if everything works as expected.
