wmv files will not open

I have downloaded files that are in the wmv format. This is the message I get "main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format." I have vlc-0.8.4 and the latest OSX. Is there a codec I am missing? Do I need another program? Thanks
