Problem with mp4a codec between 2/23 and 3/7 builds

Postby Interested Bystander » 11 Mar 2006 20:32

Hi, it appears that the latest builds (3/7-3/10 at a minimum) don't have mp4a support compiled in. At least, when I try to play a file using that audio codec (X-Men 3 1080p trailer downloaded off of Apple's site), the sound does not play in any build from 3/7 onward, but plays fine in the 2/23 build. The error message I get (plus some surrounding context) is:

main debug: looking for decoder module: 24 candidates
ffmpeg debug: refusing to use ffmpeg's (MPEG AAC Audio) decoder which is buggy
quicktime error: error on SoundConverterOpen = -50
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4a'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

main debug: killing decoder fourcc `mp4a', 0 PES in FIFO

Just FYI: this happens with my 0.8.5-test1 build as well. There is no error-message though, because the quicktime-decoder module is being used, but it doesn't output any audio. The stats don't report any audio decoding either.

no joy here either. i've got a .mov [h264] with aac audio (ripped with vlc 22/2/06) and vlc crashes every time i throw it at it. no error message or anything. i know vlc doesn't like to play h264 but aac support has been broken since 22/2/06 nightly build. i am writing this while testing 2/4/06 nightly build.

hope it's gettin sorted out soon.:) i want vlc to be my favourite player again.

It's a known issue people.......
We won't forget, AAC is critical functionality.
Now only if the faad people actually knew how to write code, then I wouldn't have so much trouble.

I'm getting no audio in files that use the mp4a codec, but I'm not getting any error. (looking in the messages window though, maybe that's not the right place?)

You mostly don't get any errors on PPC-Macs because the quicktime-decoder-module pretends to play the stream although it doesn't in fact. You can discover this in VLC's debug messages if you read closely.

The quicktime problem is critical because of front row. Is there any way to get front row to use vlc instead of quicktime. Quicktime also has black bars on the sides on my 720x480 videos. The apple trailers also run smoother than my videos at 1mbit. Is that bitrate just too low? everything is in mp4

Thank you for fixing it. I had to use MediaCentral or mplayer that I compiled. But I love VLC on OSX.

Hi all, a had problems in linux, but solved it, it was just because the faad codec is disabled by default. If you don`t need or don`t want to install libmpeg2 or/and ffmpeg try configure with these keys: --disable-ffmpeg --disable-libmpeg2 and for enable faad: --enable-faad.
