Apple Infrared Remote?

I'm pretty new to Macs and just got my new Intel model and I'm thrilled with it. Found out I need to use VLC to play the majority of my media and so far it's really cool. One addition that would really rock is the ability to use the infrared remote that came with my iMac to control VLC from across the room.

Is this possible with VLC, with some kind of VLC plugin or something, or with a third-party program or something? Just wondering...

We haven't been able to determine how we need to support this. It's not really documented, and we don't have a system to test with.
