Subtitles very late in video not displayed

I have come across a video where there is a subtitle (on an srt file) within a couple of seconds of the end of the video, but it is not displayed. In fact a little experimenting showed that even if only supposed to be displayed for a second or two, if the start time is within 5 seconds of the end of the video, it doesn't appear

Am using an (old) Macintosh running OSX vs. 10.13.6, and have just checked with the latest (3.0.21) VLC
