Taking sequential “snapshot"

I am sure that I found somewhere, a method of taking sequential “snapshots” from video. But currently there seems to be no signs of how to do it. I use an iMac running Sequoia 15.0.1, my computer skill level is limited to simple tasks. I get nervous about inputting lines of code. I cannot write my own code.
Am I imagining that it was available?
My camera (Lumix G9) produces mp4 files for its focus stacking programme. This is fine if you accept the cameras own processing. But I want to process the focus stacking stills in another photo software, Affinity Photo 2, I need separate stills in jpeg, tiff or png not MP4!
Can I take sequential stills from a one or two second mp4? I need every frame, often 40 to 60 snapshots. This is tedious to do at one shot each time.
Is this possible with VLC or do I need to find another piece of software?
