headphones not appearing as an audio device

I have my macbook (13inch mid 2012 OSCatalina 10.15.7 (19H2026)) connected to an hdmi out to my tv streaming music on youtube via chrome, wanted to plug in my headphones to watch something in VLC and just send VLC audio to my headphones. The only options I have for audio devices are:
System Sound Output Device
Built-In Output
Microsoft Teams Audio
HDMI
I don't have an option for headphones. Does anyone have any idea how I could get VLC to send audio to my headphones while my system audio continues to output to the HDMI so chrome can continue to send audio to hdmi and I can have my vlc video audio come in through just my headphones?
