VLC wont play from exFAT disk

When I copy small sized video files (any format) to my exFAT external drive they play without any problem. I tested up to 900MB .mov movies.
However when I copy larger files (these are always in .mp4 format) the correct amount of MB is displayed in Finder but when I double click VLC opens and displays a video duration of 00:00 minutes and it won't play.
Is this a problem with the .mp4 format on an exFAT? When I open the same movie on my MacBook air, VLC plays that video without any problem.

Have already tried disabling the hardware decoding but that didn't have any effect.
