How to exit vlc when clicking close button

When I double click to start playing a file in finder, I want to stop and close VLC when I click the close button or hit cmd-w.
But it just keeps playing in the background and I have to take the extra step of closing it from the taskbar and right clicking "quit"
Is there a way to disable it from continuing to play after I try to close the file?

This is weird. Clicking the red close button of the window that shows the video definitely stops playback for me with VLC 3.0.18 for Mac. The app does not close (which is the expected behavior) but playback definitely stops. Are you using the latest version? Are you using some custom configuration like video rendering outside the main window (the one with the playlist)?

I just downloaded the latest mac version 3.0.18 and the behavior is the same, playback does not stop when I close the playlist window by clicking the red close button. Isn't there an option to have VLC only open a file in a player window instead of a playlist?

Sadly, with VLC v3, there is no such option. This might change in the future.

What's the latest previous version of VLC that support the option of opening in a player window instead of a playlist?

With the latest version (3.0.18), uncheck "Show video within the main window", save and restart VLC. This should be close to what you want, no?
