Green Line on right edge of converted file

I have an MKV file pulled from a DVD using Handbrake, and when I take screenshots, there are several pixels of bright green on the right-hand edge of the image.
I use screenshots a lot for my work, and need to get rid of these green lines. I can't justify manually cropping every screenshot from here on out.
The weird thing is that this line (1) does not appear during playback with VLC; (2) does not appear when I open the screenshot JPG with macOS Preview; (3) DOES appear when I open the screenshot JPG with Gimp; (4) DOES appear when I inspect the image with Firefox.
Searching the interwebs, I have found dozens and dozens of people asking how to get rid of these green lines, giving all sorts of random suggestions, none of which work for me.
If I make screenshots with IINA Player, I don't see any green lines in the output files.
Is there some known, specific, and definitive fix to this problem with VLC? I have already spent several hours trying to sort it out.
I really like VLC and am hoping to continue using it, but seeing a zillion messages on the interwebs about this problem is kind of discouraging.
Thanks in advance
P.S. Running VLC 3.0.17.3 Intel 64-bit on macOS 10.14.6.
