Stuck on DVD menu

Whenever I try to play only One of the DVDs from a box set I own (this is 1999 US release), it will play the FBI warning card and the distributors animation. It will then go to the menu, allow me to select an option— then it plays the distributors animation again, then takes me back to the menu where it plays it as a still image and I cannot select anything from it.

Only a problem with VLC, my DVD player program does it all perfectly fine. I’ve scoured the internet for similar issues, but now I am here because I couldn’t find anything that worked :(

As a note, I am on an early 2009 iMac running 10.11.6 El Capitan

The other dvds from this box set do not have this issue, and I tested the other two box sets from the series.

I also need to play it on VLC as I’m streaming it on Twitch lol

Thank you to anyone who can help!

This seems like a bug with that specific DVD. This is weird. We will do a VLC release with DVD playback improvements this week that might help, but eventually, we might need an .ISO of the disk to verify and fix.

Regrettably, there is not much you can do to work-around. What you can try though is disabling the DVD menu option in the open dialog of VLC. Does this help to show the main movie?

Unfortunately it doesn’t, that was one of the first things I tried when I went looking for answers— it will instead just pick a scene from the “songs” category of the dvd (anime dvds are a wild time) but nothing past that. I think it gets the scenes scrambled up as well, so you may be right on it being an issue with the dvd itself :(

Well, the problem is that we never had access to the original specific of how DVDs are working and everything is reverse-engineered, so there can be bugs with borderline-compliant disks. Please download version 3.0.15 that we released today (so far available though our official website only, not yet through the updater) and see if we solved the problem. If not, an .iso file of that disk or the exact EAN code to buy it would be interesting.
