Mac Server/Amazon Fire

My home network has a Mac mini server, with an external drive attached storing my music and movies. File sharing is on, including smb and ftp. Media sharing is on, with guest access allowed and no password required.
I just got an Amazon Fire Stick Lite and downloaded the VLC app. I'd like to use it to stream from my server.
When I open the network on the VLC app I can see my server and other machines on the LAN.
But when I select the server, it says I cannot connect. It does not open a dialogue box for entering a username or password.
So, what settings do I need to check on the server?
What, if anything, do I need to do in the VLC app?
Thanks.
