VLC media player Universal 2 app

VLC media player is currently only available as either an Intel app or an app for Macs with Apple Silicon. Are there plans to offer a Universal 2 version?

Platform specific versions make it more difficult to deploy in mixed environments. One MDM in particular (Jamf School) does not allow for two duplicate apps to be deployed. This makes it impossible to deploy both Intel and Apple Silicon versions to Intel and Apple Silicon devices managed by the same MDM.

No there are no such plans to build an official Universal app, sorry.

This is due to multiple issues, like huge size of a universal app, as well as performance penalties.

We are considering to do a Universal Binary for this special use-case for the next update. However, it will not become the default download on the website for the reasons that David outlined.

You need to compile VLC both for ARM64 and x86_64 and then use our script to merge the two binaries.
