Full Screen disappears video after settings reset

I've used VLC for forever. I was trying to fix a subtitle problem that was driving me crazy. Nothing was working, so in Preferences I hit "Reset All".

Suddenly when I enter ⌘F, to go full screen, the entire video window disappears. All of the help online I can find through searching directs me to change my Mac settings. That is illogical in this case because the only settings I changed to instigate this problem were in VLC. My Mac settings should have nothing to do with it.

When the video window disappears, I can still hear audio. The play-control panel still shows. I've tried changing my default screen to every available option. I have tried going full screen from them menu, I have tried going full screen on my laptop and on a connected screen, I have tried all of the possible settings in preferences that I can understand might make some difference. Nothing works.

Can anyone help me get my full screen function back??!!
