Tone Mapping to show HDR video with better colours?

I read that since 3.0, VLC has tone mapping to play back HDR video with improved colour. I would like to use this to play back a HDR 4k video on an SDR protector.
I do not seem to be able to make this work. A video file looks good in QuickTime Player, but washed out and bad in VLC. I have tried changing the Video Output Module in settings to various settings from Automatic, to OpenGL. I see that there is also a 'Tone Mapping' section in the "Mac OS X" subsection under Output Modules, but I can't find any notes in the Wiki about this.
Is there any material on the best way to configure VLC to play back HDR video properly?
