Vlc always plays all files as 3d!

I LOVE VLC because it always seems to get everything right on all my computers. But I am now having a problem on my main computer.
I have in the past tried to play anaglyph files on VLC, with mixed success. With the supplied glasses, once i had jumped through hoops to get the files to pay 3d, nothing is really bright enough to be reliable. Still, I suppose I can see in 3d, so it does play "properly" within its own parameters.
However, now that I have made those changes to play in 3d, all files now play in side-by-side 3d??
Isn't VLC supposed to recognise file and play them as they are? I can't find any reset-to-defaults or FAQ for this and all requests for FAQs which concern 3d seem to involve PLAYING 3d files, they dont concern NOT playing files in 3d!
