Two questions about the Record function

Is the TS output from the record option in VLC a screen capture or is VLC recording the stream either networked stream or when making a recording of an MP4/TS/MKV for the purposes of having a video sample? The former would seem to be lower quality than the latter.

I use VLC sometimes to watch my IPTV subscription. I would like to be able to use VLC as a PVR and record when I can't watch live. Is there a way to set a timer with VLC to record? If there is, does anyone know if there is a tutorial since I would need to figure out how to set a specific channel and time and what I would need to do with my laptop to make sure VLC could work when I'm not around.

Thanks.

VLC never does screen captures here, it directly converts the video and audio stream data it recieves to the same or to a different format.
