Converting to mp4 gives me m4v

Hi,
I am trying to convert a video from .mkv to .mp4. I am choosing the H.264 + MP3 (MP4) and I'm clicking the keep original video track but it still comes out as M4V and it's only audio no matter where I play it. I've tried changing the extension in finder to .mp4 but that didn't make a difference. If I try converting to a .ts file it will give me video and sound but with some serious lagging and 50% shorter than the original clip.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

mp4 or m4v file extension does not really matter, its essentially the same thing.
Why you have no video I cannot say, we would need a test file or logs to give further information on that.

I have used VLC to Convert some .mov files to MP4 (using Profile: Video- H.264 + MP3(MP4) and as noted above the file is saved by VLC as a .m4v file with both Video and Sound but when opening with QuickTime Player there is no sound. Movie Inspector in Q/T Player shows Format: H.264 only no Audio information. If I then put the .m4v file through another video converter to .mp4 format the new file can be opened and played in both VLC and Q/T Player with both video and sound. I tried changing the extension to .mp4 first but that file still had no sound in Q/T Player. I am using a MacBook Air, with Mac OS Catalina 10.15.13 and VLC Version 3.0.8 Vetinari (Intel 64bit).
The compression of the original file by VLC is most impression with no noticeable lack of quality. My videos are screen recordings with voice over explanations and the smaller size is helping with the speed of uploading at this time when we are supporting our students as schools are closed or soon to be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I'd appreciate a solution if there is one. If not I'll continue to do the extra step so that all of my students will be able play the videos. Thanks for considering my submission.

I have encountered the same problem when converting mov files to MP4 on a Mac. Conversion plays well on Mac but on Android and Windows it plays video but no sound unless VLC player is installed on these devices. I have tried all version to get a MP4 but this does not appear to be possible. Is there a way of converting to MP4 that will play sound using standard players on other devices. Or is it a case that I will need to use another file converter to create basic MP4.
Thanks

I converted about 5 videos from .mkv to .mp4 with no problems in the past few days, yet since last night (using the same settings) every .mkv file I try to convert to .mp4 is coming out as .m4v. My problem is that the .m4v won't play in my DVD player. Why has VLC suddenly changed the output? Does it have anything to do with where the .mkv file originated? I can't just change the file extension to .mp4 as that doesn't work with my DVD player. I've tried other conversion softwares but they take nearly 2 hours to convert when VLC does it in minutes. Any help is VERY appreciated. Thank you!!
I'm on an iMac, iOS 10.11.6 & using VLC Version 3.0.10 Vetinari (Intel 64bit).

Hi everyone, if you problem is not the one that this topic is actually about, open a new one or look for a topic matching your issue. Else it's unlikely anyone will see it.

Hello,
May I ask what other video converter you're using? I have tried a few but they're so slow. Hopefully the one you're using is faster. Thank you.
