No Picture and Only White Noise

After trying to troubleshoot a problem decoding 5.1 audio suddenly VLC will not play ANY video file. I've tried both .mov and .m4v files that play outside of VLC just fine. When I try to play a video file I get no picture and only white noise. I haven't been able to find anything like this in the forums. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC. I've tried different audio outputs on my iMac. Can anyone help?
