A B Continious Looping with MAC VLC

Postby Galahato » 24 Oct 2019 20:00

Is there a way to set up a continuous loop (A B Looping) with the MAC version of VLC. Currently using version 3.0.8 Vetinari (64 Bit).

The WINDOWS version of VLC will allow you to show the "Advanced Menu Options" where the A B Loop shows up. The MAC version doesn't seem to allow the user to include an advanced menu option (unless I'm missing how to do it).

Here's what I want to do:

I'm watching a foreign film and I'm trying to listen/decipher what the person is saying. I want to set up an A B Loop that plays over and over and over and over again until I stop it. I can set up a loop so that it plays only once (SHIFT + COMMAND + L) --- or in other words I'll only be able to watch it once for some reason but that doesn't help at all.

Is there a way to set up an A B Loop using the MAC version? Is there a way to set up advanced controls so that A B Looping shows up on the bottom menu of VLC? Those are the two questions I have been researching online for about an hour and have given up. So I'm coming here in hopes someone can help me.

I'm not quite sure what you need. The A->B loop menu item is there in the Playback menu on the Mac. Click it once (or press the keys you mentioned yourself) to set the "A" point and click it again to set the "B" point. VLC will infinitely loop between those two points until you stop actively.

Hi Felix,

I just tried it again and it worked just fine. My apologies I should have tried it with several videos. It still will not work with the movie I was watching earlier however. The movie I was watching was 1 hour and 30 minutes long and it will loop only once and then continue playing. However, with the 30 minute show I am watching right now it loops continuously as you state. So I don't know what's up. Both files are MKV .... the only difference is one is over an hour and the other is 30 minutes. I still cannot get an A B Loop Button on the control at the bottom of VLC so I'm guessing this must be a feature of the Windows only version. I can do as you say click A B from the Playback menu section or use the shortcut controls to do it.

I just can't get the 1:30 movie to do it. So I'll try other longer movies and see if it works. Thanks.

Thanks for the follow-up. Indeed, there is a small number of files where this feature may fail. This will be better in version 4.0 (but I can't say when it will be read). The button in the toolbar is indeed an option on Windows / Linux only - on the Mac, you have the menu item only.

This is ridiculous. Still no proper A-B select; still no ability to open multiples without terminal use/hacks. Is it that difficult to incorporate these features, which are present in Win (and Linux?)? Please explain why these features have not been included FOR YEARS ongoing.

The plain and simple explanation for the lack of the features you are asking for is the lack of developer time needed to do them. You can only do as much at a time.
