VLC rendering from Macbook to chromecast: black screen with only audio playing BUT only with certain files

Hi,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with Chromecast: some files cast perfectly to my TV, with great picture and sound quality. BUT others show a black screen with only the audio successfully casting. ALL the files I'm trying to cast are .MKV, but sourced from various places so there isn't necessarily any consistency in other aspects of their formatting (eg. subtitles or no subtitles). I haven't tried MPEGs, mP4s, etc...
The only other details displayed on the TV screen are the file name, and a video progress bar that shows the wrong end time. For example, it will sometimes show the end time of the video as "-0.01", and the progress dot will not move past 0.00 screen.
I am casting from my 4.5 year old Macbook (running the lastest version of OS) to my new 3rd gen Chromecast. I have updated VLC to make sure I'm running everything current.
I can't see any clear differences between the formatting of those files that cast perfectly, and those that show just the black screen + audio. However I wouldn't know where to start looking, so I'm very open to suggestions there. Perhaps there's something that VLC is doing to some .MKV files and not others?
I haven't seen anyone else post with this kind of inconsistent problem (most other posters here seem to be reporting rendering to Chromecast not working for any files at all if there is a problem). So thanks for any and all suggestions!
