Sorry, I really did try to search for the answer; the only one I found wasn't on this site and outdated.

I just want to record some random video I see on some website through my browser (Safari, for example, but Google Chrome is fine) but using VLC. Step-by-step instructions (preferably avoiding issuing commands at the command line).

Sorry for what's probably a super obvious answer for many of you. I'm on an iMac so using the Mac version of VLC.

Does it matter which website it is? Any website that plays video. The point is you're capturing that window in your browser... whatever is going on in that browser.

And rather than getting bogged down in which browser / which website, just even more generally asking how to record the entire desktop (which may have one or two or more browsers overlapping). The point is to catch the video appearing on one's computer.

Oh drats, was hoping someone would reply with at least an overall answer. Does VLC not actually provide such a screen video capture ability at all?

Ok, if I can't find this in the help area/instructions, despite there being capture buttons, etc. ... should I assume VLC doesn't actually record video shown on websites? Livejas*** etc?

Nobody here has any clue how? Or at least a simple yes/no whether said feature works? Seriously? Bloody hell.

Screw it. I'll just go snag a free product that is made specifically for what I mentioned. Thanks so little, for your utter lack of help here.
