Tivo Files in Final Cut???

Does anyone know how to convert .tivo or mpg files to mov files for importing to final cut. I am trying to edit out the commercials from my Tivo flicks.
I have been using VLC for file conversion but havn't been able to get the final output into Final Cut.
Please advise.
