VLC automatically resizing video during playback macOS 10.14.4

Postby MayorofFrownsville » 05 Apr 2019 00:08

Ever since I updated to macos 10.14.4 VLC will randomly resize whatever I'm watching during playback to fit my screen size. For example, if I'm watching a widescreen movie (black bars top and bottom) VLC will randomly decide it doesn't like that and stretch the video to fit my screen insted. It also happens if I put my mouse on the top menu. I checked to make sure aspect ratio is locked, tried resetting everything, uninstalling/reinstalling, nothing seems to work. I use my computer to play movies and tv shows a lot so I find this to be extremely frustrating. Is anyone else experiencing this? Hopefully someone here can help me out, thank you!

Hi, I don't use macosx so I don't really know, but maybe look at the macosx-video-autoresize parameter in your settings?

I can confirm the issue. Mojave 10.4.4 and VLC 3.0.6.
VLC autoresizes to fit the screen (ignoring aspect ratio) whenever I press "Playback", "Subtitles" or "Help" in the menu (everything is fine with "File", "Edit", "Audio", etc.) or, for instance, open "About VLC Media Player" window.

Tried restarting, resetting the settings, reinstalling the app, installing older (2.*) version.
Tried launching VLC with --no-macosx-video-autoresize. Did not help.
I didn't find the checkbox in the settings though. Can you please point me in the right direction where to find it?

Hi, is it close to this ticket? https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/21473

Hey.

No, not at all. The resize for me does not relate to camera. Only when opening menu ("Playback", "Subtitles" or "Help") the resize happens.

Found the option "Resize interface to the native video size". Toggling it did not help as well.

Ok, so it looks like a real bug. Could you create a ticket on https://trac.videolan.org ? The two main developer for macosx are checking bugs there.

Any word on this yet? I updated to 10.14.5 hoping the problem would be fixed. Nope. Thank you so much napz9090 for posting that GIF, it was kind of hard to explain.

I'm having the same issue in VLC version 3.0.8 in October of 2019. Can anyone tell me if this issue is fixed and I am not finding how to fix my window size, or if this issue is still in the works by VLC?

This should be fixed in 3.0.7, can you provide more information what exactly is the issue you are seeing?

Same issue here, I am running the latest version of VLC Player 3.0.11.1 and my OSX is 10.14.6. My Mac Pro is a 5,1, running 12-Core 3.46, Ram 128GB, GPU: ATI Radeon 5770 1G MB. The same video will play in Quicktime with no issues, so what gives ?

Try to reset preferences first.

I'm using VLC 3.0.14 and still seeing the problem on Catalina 10.15.7. I changed VLC's configuration using the GUI and confirmed that the change was saved to the config file. But after restarting the app, VLC still automatically resizes the window to full size (which overflows my window).

Hi everyone,

I have the same problem with the latest VLC for Mac (3.0.21) on Sonoma 14.7.2.

Any progress on solving it ?

Cheers and happy holidays
