I'm running on a 2010 Mac Mini with 8 gig of RAM and 512gig SSD running MacOSX 10.13.6 and VLC 3.0.6 64-bit

I've never had any issues playing back video files on this machine, but recently, 1080p (and some 720p) MKV files
have been causing problems (these problems go back to at least VLC 3.0.4, maybe a bit earlier).
When I try to play them using VLC, the video will freeze at the very beginning but the audio will continue
normally. I have no choice but to re-encode them as MP4.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Can you disable hardware decoding in preferences and try again?
