Behavior of Forward/Back buttons in Main Window

I'm using 3.0.4, but for all I know, this could applly to earlier versions as well...
I like to keep the Previous and Next buttons hidden, because I never use them, so it's just GUI clutter to me. However, it seems that, when those buttons are hidden, the Forward and Back buttons also operate as Previous/Next. The behavior is inconsistent and rather frustrating - for example, if I play a vew video (after having played at least one other video), and I press Forward, the video skips forward. Press Forward a few times, and it changes to the next video in the playlist. Press Forward again from there, and it goes to the next video again - it completely stops working as a Forward button.
I thought perhaps the intention was for the Forward/Back buttons to operate as Previous/Next when you are very close to the beginning or end of a video, but that does not seem to be the case (or the implementation is flawed). Regardless, I was wondering if there was any way to prevent Forward/Back from operating as Previous/Next, without resorting to showing the Previous/Next buttons in the GUI. Either that, or if there is a way to completely disable the automatic creation of playlists, so that there's no previous or next video to go to, that might be ok too.
