Installed VLC 3.0.3 and noting but trouble, when trying to play DVD i get beachballs and must force quit, until i delete all related preferences files in /Cache and /Library in home folder.

Usually this only works once after, then it happens again the second attempt.. I'm thinking of going back to 3.0.2. Is there a solution to this issue?

Even VLC 3.0.2 has issues,,,, I traced it down to DVD's... not just the burnt dvd, but even commercial DVD's display black screen and beach ball

MP4's play fine however.

This is quite weird, to be honest. Can you disable hardware decoding in preferences?

If I disable Video Output in VLC >> Preferences, and start playback, i get audio just fine, but flicking videi.

I solved the flicking by disabling the Video Track (Video >>Video Track >Disable), and in this case, playlist is not flicking, and audio plays fine. without video obviously. VLC doesn't beach-ball now at least

The next step would probably test under another user account,,, otherwise I was going to reinstall OS,s and play DVD with "no Apple updates" applied. to 10.12.6

I'm wondering if Apple updates could be the cause.

update: Not Apple updates. Installed OS X 10.12.6 from scratch. no security updates applies, just installed VLC 3.0.3 and got same issue when playing discs.

disabling hardware decoding didn't work.

We need the full stacktrace.

Can't do that...The application is completely frozen and beach balled, so cannot save message log. (Command-Shift-M)

When it crashes, the macOS dialog for crashes will give you a stacktrace.

ok, I've tested this on new OS X install and seems isolated to verities DVD's which causes the crash...

"Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring" and "A Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" caused VLC to "unexpectedly" quit with beach ball, with or without hardware decoding.

However "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" play just fine.

Apart from that, I cannot click when the issue does happen "Send Report" does not work, since its beachballs at that stage, therefore can't get stacktrace. I haven't tested others

At the moment, I'm trying to see what causes this with these two discs. Since they both play find in standard DVD player, and are retail discs.

OK, that narrows it down quite a bit.

When does it happen, in those movies?

For LOTR, A variety of issues when playing these discs.
Intermittent issues:

(1). just after "Play" button is clicked in VLC, (2). after the menu but sometimes before Dolby splash screen (3). or after the Dolby screen

In all cases, when you hit "Stop" in the VLC interface, VLC closes without any errors..

(a. A Girl with the Dragon tattoo: After "play" button is clicked beachballs

I could try making a copy of the DVD so see if the disc if the issue. ?

Update: Finally got stracktrace, but couldn't put it on pastebin due to over 512 on guest account, so URL link instead:- (LOTR Disc)

Resolved: Ripping both these DVD's, and playing VIDEO_TS folder from hard drive works fine. :)
