Mac VLC - Two Windows

I'd like to upgrade to VLC 3.

However, ever since its introduction two windows open when playing a movie - a small window and a large window. The movie plays in the large window while the small window displays a static image. Closing the small window causes the large window to close.





The last version of VLC, 2.2.8, does not do this.

I've tried resetting VLC's preferences but the second smaller window remains.

How do I get rid of the smaller window?

I'm having the same issue and can't figure out how to get rid of the other window. It's happening with every single one of my movies that I encoded using handbrake. It doesn't appear when I play any mkv files that contain the raw bluray movie file. I use Subler to tag all my movies so I'm wondering if that is the cause of the issue. Let me know if you find a fix otherwise I may go back to the previous version as well.

I see this issue as well.
Yes if you use subler to view the .mp4 file, there is a second "video track", but in reality it simply is a .jpeg that is used as the thumbnail image.
To your point that there are 2 video tracks, this should not play at the same time.
When there are multiple audio tracks, you don't hear every audio track at the same time, nor do multiple subtitle tracks show at the same time.
There is a default track that plays and the user would manually select a different track if desired.
I believe this is incorrect behavior for VLC, multiple video tracks or not.

No. This is the correct behaviour.

There are lots of cases, with multiple video outputs, including 3D or dual-monitor video.

Your file is buggy: jpeg should not be a video track, but declared as a thumbnail. Complain to the Subler

In your logs, I see a lot of tracks, 2 tx3g (subtitles), one text (subtitles), one avc1 (video), 2 mp4a (audio), 2 AC-3 (audio) and one other video track (JPEG)

So yeah, VLC is doing the right thing.

So, there definitely has default behavior change from 2.2.8 to the 3.x versions of VLC.
Although it probably is working as VLC intended, this is not logical.

The source of the problem is that Subler and some other muxers have support for other players to create video files with a chapter thumbnail if it does not support artwork.
Subler 1.4.12 has this feature. Not sure when this was added, but it apparently has been a while because the 2.2.8 never opened 2 windows.

VLC 2.2.x did not support multiple video tracks on macOS. 3.0.x does, which is correct.
