Issue with custom preview thumbnails in Finder converting to 1:1?

Hi all. I've always liked to create custom preview images for my VLC files, as often the default setting is to use a screen grab from the first few seconds of the movie file, which is often just all black, or maybe a generic opening title. Sometimes I'll use a promo image, other times I'll take a screenshot with the lead actor in it or something.

I'll get the image, copy it to clipboar, find the movie file, right click > get info (Mac) and then paste the image over the top of the default preview image.

It's worked a treat for years. Then two months ago, randomly, I found that even though I was using horizontal images, VLC was automatically resizing them to 1:1 (just squishing the image). So now it seems I can either just have the default landscape preview image, or a custom, squished square image of choice.

Can anyone provide any insight into why this is happening and how I can get back to customising my preview images?

Thanks in advance!

Did you ever sort this out? I'm having trouble with this too, and I'm sure it's something small!
