2.2.8 does not detect existing 3.x update

When clicking "Check for updates" in VLC's menu, it will show a message that 2.2.8 is the most recent version.

This with VLC 2.2.8 (German language) on OS X 10.11.6

Avast detects it in its software updater section, but VLC itself can't find any updates?

This is expected, because we do not want to enable auto-updates for all users, yet. This will be done with one of the next minor versions, once we are sure that the release is rock-stable for everyone.

I wasn't talking about auto update, I tried to manually recheck version in update window. btw are you saying that 3.0.1 isn't stable? should I stay with 2.2.8? thanks

VLC 3.0 is considered stable already, but they are small issues in 3.0.1 which are already known.
