VLC 3.0 Continue Playback doesn't work without hitting Stop first

In old versions of VLC I could just hit Cmd+Q while watching a video, and the next time I opened the file it would continue playback. With VLC 3 I have to hit the Stop button first or it doesn't remember the position. Any chance we can get the old behaviour reinstated or is there a setting I'm missing to enable it?

Quite likely that we broke that. I'll have a look.

We already have a ticket for that, and we'll look into it.

This worked for me:

---
I upgraded from 2.2.0 to 3.0.2 (64 bit) on Win 10 and it broke ‘Continue playback’ function.

In Preferences>Interfaces> “Main interfaces” the interface module was set to “default”. I changed this to “Qt” and it fixed the Resume Play.

“Continue playback?” was also set to “Always”.

This issue on the mac is fixed with 3.0.3 (or maybe an earlier version already). Please not that this is only about the mac version (as this is the macOS subforum).

For the Qt interface on Linux or Windows another implemenation applies, but I do not know any problems there either.

I found out today that I have the same issue (running VLC 3.0.3). But the question is do Continue Playback supposed to work if I've disabled Keep Recent Items or not? Because if I enable Keep Recent Items then Continue Playback works.
Any possibility to disable Keep Recent Items but enable Continue Playback?

No, continue playback by design does not work if you diabled keep recent items. Both is linked together. If you do not want to save recent items, how should we save recent items + the last playback position for those?

One of the main reasons I use VLC
is that feature.

Often I don't have time to watch a whole video.

Mine doesn't work even on hitting STOP.

The only thing that works is AUTOMATICALLY restarting.

(Setting it to QT interface doesn't work)

This is why I avoid updates lol.

I have the same problem - VLC 3.0.4 (64-bit) on Windows 10, Qt settings include:
* Save the recently played items in the menu (this seems to be the current replacement setting for "keep recent"?)
* Continue playback? Always

And yet it NEVER resumes playback from the last point watched.
:(

What else should I check?

thank you,

For me it only works for .mkv files, it doesn't work for mp4 files.
There is an error saying

Non-linear index detected, not supported
Invalid stream index 2 for index at pos ....

It does not save the position until ~2:20. Everything after this time are saved fine. But why not <2:20 ?!!!

Same at the end of video...

Please make an option to change this...

EDIT: Just noticed this was a Mac section. I am having the same issue on Windows.

I have 3.0.6 and resume only works sometimes. Also recent media does not always show everything I have played. Possible factors contributing to this although I have tested and cannot find a way to duplicate it...

Getting the same problem with 3.0.6 running on Windows, BUT its not erratic, it just doesnt save the last viewed point until you are into the video a bit. Its not at -2:30 as the other poster said, but havent bothered to see exactly what the time it has to be past which it is saved.

Hello every one
I succeed to make continue playback work for me.
follow this steps :
1- In Preferences > Interfaces : set "Continue playback?" to “Always”
2- don't use Custom skin (I don't know why, but it works when I switch to "Use native style")
I hope it works for you, thanks.

I registered just so I could just to add my own testing results, which is that for my environment VLC 3.0.0-6 broke continue playback completely on Win7. I have both 32 and 64bit machines, as well as a Win10 and my main workstation which is KUbuntu (all OSes are at latest build/sp). [edit: single monitor, single instance of the app - and every one of these setups has the feature working perfectly on versions 2.1 and 2.2] Doesn't matter if I hit STOP or not, doesn't matter if it's mp4 mkv or avi. Using a skin or not, and with the recent items always enabled as I use it. I SINCERELY wanted to move to version 3 despite the enormous volume of posts I've read from users and extension creators. But every dot build seems to be getting worse.
I'm an open-source supporter and do my share of donating to every app I use, and I do have respect for the project and efforts of the team.
That being said open-source or not, donation-ware should still function in solid fashion and my read of every changelog since 3.0.0 broke the GUI on Windows so bad users couldn't click checkboxes - and what I read is about slick new features being the focus.
How about making sure you got what's there now working before adding more stuff to break it further?

[and for what it's worth, in 35yrs as a software engineer I have been involved with more than a few open-source projects - so I will hope any fellow dev that reads this will consider the points validity and not focus on the frustrated tone]

Again, this is the macOS section of this forum. :-)
You will likely not get any help here for windows issues.
