Hi there!
When I try to cast, VLC freezes and after few seconds shuts down.
Any help? Thanks!

Same here, MBP with High Sierra 10.13.3 the app is "trying" to cast any file to selected renderer(s) and nothing happens.
Tried .mkv,.avi,.x264 on Chromecast and .mp3 on Home and Chromecast Audio.Nothing.
No crash here, but yellow triangle on playlist and...that's all.
Any ideas ?

Same here. Tried different movie codecs, but apart from (sometimes) a brief blue wave progress bar in VLC, nothing happens.
Might it be possible that only Chromecast 2 is supported and not Chromecast 1?

Can'f even figure out if only MKV is supported or what settings might improve the lack of functioning.

Any help/solutions?

I too can not see how to stream to chromecast using VLC 3.0 for MAC.. i also am running version 10.13.3 The whole reason frankly that i downloaded this app was for this purpose. SO where do we go for help.. Also downloaded the IOS version 3.0 for this purpose and that doesn't work either. Frustrated and confused

Under the application tab "playback" choose the "renderer" tab. here you should see a list of any and all chrome cast devices you have on your network. Select and it should work. Having said that although it finds my tv to cast to it still does not work and i find that i am having the same issues you are all describing. it worked once the very first time i did this briefly but not working at all now

And if even that is not working, use the 4.0.0 nightly build. That was for me the only way to get VLC to render to Chomecast. The 3.0 was a dead end for me (10.10.5)

If I am not mistaken, the Chromecast option for output in VLC 3.0.0 only exists on Windows and Android, not on macOS or Linux or iOS. I successfully tried it out on Windows 10 64-bit (the latest “Fall Creators Update” version), but I have had zero luck finding the option for it on macOS 10.12.6 Sierra.

Oh well, hopefully the development team will port the Chromecast feature to more platforms in some future 3.0.x release. For now I guess when I want to cast from a Mac to my Chromecast I can do it the old-fashioned way, with a Google Chrome extension (I currently use one called Videostream).

But VLC independently reverse engineering the protocol for casting to a Chromecast and making it open-source is really really cool and I really hope it gets ported to all the major platforms VLC runs on, since VLC supports a lot more file types and codecs than Chrome extensions like Videostream and is able to re-encode them into something a Chromecast can decode, on the fly, at least in the Windows version of VLC media player. As just one example, I was able to play an H.265/HEVC video (that had a low bitrate) on on original version 1 Chromecast, which does not support this codec, using VLC on Windows, since VLC converted it to H.264/AVC (which the original Chromecast DOES support) on the fly.

Too bad all this doesn’t seem to be implemented on the Mac version of VLC quite yet.

The release info specifically indicates that the feature is also for Mac. As I stated in the rendering dropdown it finds the device.
