Record desktop will not result in video file

Postby John_Richmond » 06 Jan 2018 07:15

Hi all

I have been using VLC for a while now without the problems that a lot of you are experiencing, however, when the 2.2.6 came along everything went pear-shaped.

I have been producing demo videos with great success up until now.

I haven't done anything different to what I normally do... And when I record my desktop the program behaves normally, but I end up with an mp3 file with no sound.

Considering that I wanted an mp4 without sound; it's pretty annoying. I usually add the soundtrack after the video on VLC without any problems at all.

When I... open capture device/ Desktop (from the drop-down menu) /10.00 f/s/ Convert (from the 'Play' drop-down)/ Browse (to the destination folder) and save my new file

it has an mp3 extension instead of an mp4.

I have even clicked on the 'create a new profile' button directly above the 'Browse' and selected 'mp4' and created a new name and then browsed the destination as described above, which in the past has never failed.

But I still end up with an mp3!

Today I downloaded the latest version 2.2.8 hoping that this glitch had been fixed but unfortunately it hasn't.

So... Am I the first one reporting this issue? It is so frustrating; I have put a lot of work in to my latest project and I can't get it off the ground.

This is my first post. :?

Well it's me again... Never one to let the grass grow.

I have my problem sorted but it is not ideal... I came across another post that got me thinking.

One day when I was successfully producing my demos I remember noticing that the 'Containers' only had mp3 in it.

I thought it strange at the time but quickly dismissed it when everything was business as usual.

Someone on this website, can't remember who, mentioned that his 'Containers' only had one file extension too. His post was over four years ago; but nevertheless it got me thinking.

Both the 2.2.6 and 2.2.8 versions do not allow you to select the only other option on the drop-down, namely 'All Files'.

So I made the decision to get an older version of VLC. I know the anti-penultimate version worked for me so I went looking for it on the VLC website.

And I was about to download it when I decided to remove the current version first. Well to my surprise it was still in my previous version section of VLC properties along with the latest 2.2.8 and the previous 2.2.6.

So I promptly uninstalled them both and reinstalled the one that never gave me hassle. The upshot of this is I managed to get VLC working properly again and made sure I removed the tick from the update box.

From the posts I have read and scanned on this site, so far this year, no-one else has yet complained about this issue. I am certain there will be posts sooner or later.

I hope that others find my experience informative, if not helpful.

Hi all

I’m back a lot sooner than I’d have wished. I have now got a problem with adding the soundtrack to a video file.

I am recording the desktop a number of times and merging the files; and I know there is a problem with 2.2.6 and 2.2.8 in this regard; for when I attempt to add the audio file there is no option in the ‘containers’ file extension for me use and the ‘All Files’ does not cooperate with my request. So I am now using 2.2.5.1 and that issue has been put down and may it R.I.P.

Yesterday, after having merged fifteen video files (<10 MB), I tried to add the soundtrack. In the past I have succeeded quite a few times; so it is not a procedural issue.
I am getting a black screen with a cute orange cone in the centre and my soundtrack. The other thing of note is that the blue progress bar takes a nanosecond (okay I exaggerate slightly… six, maybe seven seconds) to go across the screen.
This is not normal with a video file in tow.

Anyway… I changed the video output to ‘OpenGL’ and it fixed my problem. The progress bar took a good thirty seconds to reach the end. You get a sense that it was actually processing the video content this time. I successfully added the soundtrack and everything is honky dory. Or rather, it was until I noticed a goof in the video content. I fixed that up and merged the video files once more.

When it came to adding the soundtrack; the progress bar did a Carl Lewis across the screen and I was back to square one. I checked the video output and it had reverted back to ‘Automatic’ despite saving my preferred option. So I selected ‘OpenGL video output’ and tried again; it still wouldn’t play ball.

The next thing I did was check the ‘Display the output’ box at the convert / profile step prior to browsing the destination file to save. This time the conversion was in real time and the progress bar took the duration of the audio file to complete its journey. However, the displayed video had a hankering for the opening scene and froze after a real nanosecond.

So it is not forgetting to take the video file with it; but it looks like this marriage was doomed from the start! Even though it succeeded less than half an hour earlier.

Is there anyone out there got any ideas on how to fix this?
I would appreciate it.
