Fatal freeze in full screen while using native fullscreen modus

MacOs Hig Sierra 10.13.2
VLC Weartherwax 2.2.8(Intel 64bit)
MacBook (retina 12-inch, early 2015)

Using external iiyama monitor via Apple VGA adapter.

Issue:

When switching video's to fullscreen, sometimes the video totally freezes my Laptop. The sound just plays on, but the Laptop is totally unresponsive to every command / keyboard press. The only way to get out off this state is to power off the Laptop and reboot.

Discusion:

This behaviour only appeared recently. It is hard to tell if this was after the latest MacOS update or after the latest VLC update.

I managed to isolate the issue to using the VLC option: "Use the native fullscreen mode" in the Interface setting.
Unchecking this option, improves the behaviour as I observed no crashes, with the option off.
However I would like to have this option switched on as it is much easier to control VLC when using a second monitor or beamer.

As the system totally freezes it is hard to do any analyses. After the reboot there is no crash report in the user library.

Any suggestions to further analyse this crash are welcome.

Additions and bug replication

I found a more or less reliable way to replicate this bug.

Conditions to replicate the bug

1) The video need to play on my second monitor, that is connected with Apple VGA adapter to my Laptop. The bug does not occur on my Laptop when I play the video on the building monitor.

Steps to replicate the bug

1) "Use the native fullscreen mode" in VLC interface strings must be check (on) With the bug will not replicate
2) Start video and move window to secondary (#2) monitor
3) Double click the player to go to full screen
4) Double click again to leave full screen
5) Show sVlc settings by pressing Cmd-, or show VLV version by clicking the "VLC about menu"
6) double click video player to go to full screen
7) repeat switching from and to full screen by double clicking in quick succesion for two or more times till video freezes.

Additional information

I downgraded to VLC version 2.2.7, 2.2.4 and 2.2.2
All versions replicate the bug as described above
I think it's pretty save that this bug is not correlated to recent upgrades of VLC. Probably it is correlated with recent upgrades in MacOS.
However VLC is the only program on my system that is suffering from this total display freeze.

When the video freezes, there is no interaction of any kind possible. Even Cmd, Alt, Esc doesn't bring up the "Force quite application screen"
Only thing that still works is the moving the mouse pointer, however, not interaction with the MacOs interface is possible

Hope this helps, squashing this bug.

This is the same thing happening on 10.13.3 Beta, Mac Pro Late 2013.

Can reproduce 100% of the time, full screen crashes if there is more than one monitor plugged into the Mac Pro.

Causes a Kernel Panic.
unsure when issue started as I have been running without two monitors since December, just put it back on last night.

Updated issue still persisted. Downloaded latest nightly of 3, same issue.
Other programs do not have the issue (such as Quicktime, MPlayer OSX Extended)

Hi has any found any solution for this?

I have the same issue and it appeared after I upgraded to MacOS Sierra (10.13.6).

I tried several versions of VLC same issue. I am using a beamer (projector) as second monitor.

Few seconds after I go full screen my whole system freezes and i need to turn off my computer and restart. It does not matter if it is one file or many. It does not matter if i go full screen by right click or by clicking on the full screen icon or via the interface bar.

I am a fan of VLC, I hope this is fixed or someone can suggest a solution, or the app will become useless for me.

thanks

VLC 2.2.8 is outdated and not supported anymore. Please try with the latest VLC version downloaded from videolan.org

Fast forward to ver.3.0.18, and the freezing problem is still present. At some point in a video, VLC locks the entire system to the condition where the only way to release it is to hard-restart. At the time of the situation unraveling itself, VLC is in full-screen. I'm using macOS 10.9. I'm also running macOS as old as 10.7, and I haven't noticed the issue emerge. The similar online reports point to much newer macOS iterations such as 10.14, and macOS 12 as well.
