So I updated the newest version that was asked for lately to update to but then suddenly for my videos a major of them...the subs stopped showing up.....but there is some videos that show the subs as normal but for my majority of videos it doesn't anymore.....last night the subs came back but then they were gone again this morning....I tried re-installing it to see if it would fix the problem but it doesn't either....so what can I do to fix this problem so I can see the subs? (I also tried to reset the subs in preference as well)

I have similar problem.
To be exact, I only have problem with .ssa files so far. I tried to load .srt files and it works.

If I run VLC in such way

Code: Select all

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC some_vid.mkv --sub-file some_sub.ssa
It complains that

Code: Select all

[ass] Shaper: FriBidi 0.19.7 (SIMPLE) HarfBuzz-ng 1.0.6 (COMPLEX) Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file [ass] No usable fontconfig configuration file found, using fallback. Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file [ass] Using font provider fontconfig
But if I export anything thing like

Code: Select all

export FONTCONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/etc/fonts/
Then the .ssa subtitle will be correctly rendered.

It looks as if VLC doesn't know where to find a correct fonts.conf file, which will be used by fontconfig.
Do anyone know where VLC looks for that file?

Just registered to say I was having this issue too. I downloaded the nightly build and it appears to load subs now.

I'm having a similar issue. It was working fine and then the update message appeared. After updating the subtitles are not showing anymore. I didn't try other formats, but my issue is with .srt files with .mkv.

Does anybody know how to fix it?

I have the same issue with external *.ass subtitles after 2.2.6 update.

Kudos to jorgealison for his suggestion:

Solution

Subtitles Show Up in Some, Not All, mkv or Stop Showing Up on VLC 2.2.6

After spending a day reloading, following directions, resetting, sacrificing a virgin--no one important--I noted in one of these unresolved complaint threads a recommendation to download the Nightly Build.

Here is the Current as of today. The page for the builds in case you find them hard to find:

https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/last/

Downloaded -> Fired it Up -> WORKED. I tested this on a number of .mkv that have failed or started to fail.

Mods/Admins/Powers That Be: I will copy/paste this on a few other threads where there is no solution to this problem. This is not an attempt to "spam" or increase my numbers. Just want to help!

I would suggest keeping both the stable and nightly build versions of VLC. Download the nightly build to, say, the desktop and then rename it to "VLC Nightly" or something like that. You can then put it in your Applications folder without it over-writing your stable VLC.

Why?

I noticed that the stable version does not show the subtitles only on some mkv video--some 1080p it seems--from the same series. Not all of them. The nightly build is, naturally, "buggy" and will frequently crash on these video. So if the stable shows the subtitles, go with that. Using the nightly it may work fine . . . or it may crash every few minutes.
