Cannot open VLC because of -36 error

I updated to Sierra 10.12.2 and having been using VLC 2.2.4... I have a lot of files saved on an external hd on the network. After updating, when I try to play any video file, I'm getting the -36 error shown here

Things I've tried:
- reinstall VLC
- reboot macbook, external hd, and airport extreme router
- running dot_clean on the path to the videos

Those didn't work so what can I do about this? Are there logs in VLC I can look at? Help please, this is super annoying :?

Edit: forgot to add that opening the files manually through File>Open will allow the videos to play correctly, but trying to open them directly from the network drive shows the above error

Strange... I just tried on my MB Pro (macOS Sierra) - and opening network files works fine, both via File/Open or when right clicking "Open with" in Finder...
I tested with version Version 2.2.4 Weatherwax - the one you currently get via "brew cask install vlc".

Network drive i tested was Samba share from Ubuntu

I am having same issue.. as of a couple days ago cannot open files with VLC on my Apple Time Capsule. Even restored the whole drive erased and restored factory settings. My Apple TV will also not open files with VLC. SO ANNOYING!! Hopefully a fix is found soon i am assuming a apple or vlc update caused this as i have tried everything and read a million posts.

I however can use VLC no problem on my Mac and transfer files from time capsule to mac and use no problem. i can also go file - open in VLC and find the file and open in through VLC on my mac, however if i double click the file i get the error code. ugh...
