Freezes at certain DVD Disclaimer screens

Hi I am using a MiniMac G4, 1.42 GHz and 1 GB DDR SDRAM, Mac OS 10.3.9 installed. My current version of VLC is 0.8.2.

I have a problem with some DVDs, like Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS R2 Special Edition and FANNY & ALEXANDER R2 (Swedish) just to name two. The problem is that when I play the disc and the opening disclaimer about copyright is showing, VLC does not load onto the next screen (which is usually the DVD menu).

In some cases I can use the 'Title' menu and jump directly to the DVD Menu (or into the film) but in other cases I can't, and I am stuck at the disclaimer screen. Sometimes VLC crashes here as well.

I can still view the films by disabling the 'Use DVD Menus' tickbox and choosing the appropriate title, so the discs themselves are working fine (they all work in Apple's DVD Player), so I suppose it is a minor nuisance. I prefer using VLC to Apple's DVD Player though and would like to be able to view my discs properly.

Does anyone else have these problems and is there a cure?

Cheers

This happens to me on many, many dvds. I'm currently in a state where I'm not really sure if there's any software on os x that would play dvds with menus regardless of region. VLC just seems so unstable and kludgy in either my 12" ibook or a G5 powermac.

The mini has a new RPC2 drive, so as a rule will not play any region-locked DVD unless the region is properly set. Since you can play with DVD Player, the region must have been set.

Anyway, it is usually no problem to pick and choose chapters through the VLC menu.
