No Video only audio running OSX in a Virtual Machine

Searched all over but no luck...

I have a macbook pro running El Capitan with both Parallels v11 and VMware Fusion 8.11 on it.
For software development I use a VM running OSX in a Virtual Machine on my OSX host (!). All works fine except NO video when I try to play a video file. Audio plays fine and NO errors in VLC's error log. Tried switching to MAC OS Open GL as Video output in the settings (as well as Core Animation Open GL) but no luck.

The strange thing is that QuickTime DOES work (however I need VLC due to the multiple file support..).

Other information
- VLC Version 2.2.4
- Tried while running both Yosemite and El Capitan in the VM; both have the same results (NO Video, only Audio)
- Tried the above with OSX images created with Fusion as well as Parallels with the same results...
- Tried installing different free Video Players for Mac and they all seem to behave the exact same way..
- VLC on my HOST does work without any problems..

Any ideas??
Many thanks!
Floris

Yes, it is known that video is not working in virtual machines. AFAIK the video driver is not correctly supporting some opengl feature.

It's an old threat but I have the same problem and wanted to know if in the meantime something changed and VLC is able to play videos in a VM

I am using Mojave on my iMac and would like to upgrade to Catalina. But for a few 32bit apps I'd like to keep a Mojave on a Parallels VM. And one of these apps work together with VLC Player. Quicktime Player can display videos in VM. But I need VLC.

Thanks anybody for help!

edit: BTW on a Windows 7 VM VLC works!

No, nothing changed here as far as I know so far.
