It does run flawlessly actually. Do you have QuickTime 6.5.2?

Okay, I asked this because VLC makes actually use of some QT-functions, which could have triggered this behaviour.

Anyway, does changing the video-output-module help? Please go to Video -> output modules inside VLC's preferences, check the advanced-flag at the bottom and choose "Quartz video" instead of "Default".

Sorry to be a nuisance but I can't find a quartz/default option in the vlc preferences/video modules window.

Well, it isn't in Video, but in Video -> Output modules. Additionally, you need to check the advanced-flag at the bottom of the window.

I hit vcl Preferences then Video then ticked Advance box. Up come various boxes to tick (or not) starting with Enable Video box at the top and ending with Zoom Video box at the bottom. No Quartz/Default option. I gotta be doing something wrong and will go and stand in the corner in dunce's cap when some kind person tells me what it is!

You've probably noticed the triangle to the left of "Video". Did you click on it? It will show a sub-category called "output modules".

Problem solved - one screen again. Very many thanks. I'm going to the corner now.

That's not necessary. You're welcome.

You aren't the first who didn't know about the functionality of the triangles.
