Subtitle and Mac Mini

I am using VLC 0.8.2 with MacMini Mac OS X 10.4.2. I am having problem with loading subtitle. I have used all the methods found in this forum but no dice. The Subtitle is grayed out. I use the "open file" and "load subtitle" option and still no subtitle. Can any one help and let me know how I can make the subtitle work. Much thanx in advacne.
