A couple of years ago before version 2 came out, I was easily able to set a video as my desktop background. Haven't used VLC for quite some time and wanted to try it on my new mac but the settings are all different. Can someone explain to me how to set a video as my background in which in loops infinitely when I tell it to.

This can be done in vlc, and I find a guide, follow it you can easily set video as desktop wallpaper. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/18167/se ... -with-vlc/

I think that still works as before: Goto advanced preferences, select the video tab, and here you find a checkbox to enable video mode. Restart VLC afterwards.

Note that you also need to disable the native fullscreen mode for this to work.
