Turn on your speakers !!
(It's a joke, of course... but if you explain your problem with more details, it could be easier for us to help you...)

When I play a movie, the movie will be playing and everything is fine but there's no sound. I have VLC version 0.8.2. All of the movies are either mpegs or AVI. I'm not sure what those really mean. I have a powerbookG4 and I have no idea what kind of speakers they are. The built-in kind??? Thank you so much!!!

Okay, delete the VLC-folder and org.videolan.vlc.plist in ~/Library/Preferences (your personal perferences-folder) and try again.
Internal PowerBook speakers usually work fine. Only external speakers can be problematic in certain circumstances.
If deleting the preferences does not help, give the follow information please: which version of Mac OS X do you use and which version of QuickTime? does the playback of music in iTunes or other applications work?
