Won't go to fullscreen by clicking green fullscreen button

Since updating to version 2.2.1 my vlc player won't expand to fullscreen from clicking the green fullscreen button. Clicking the green fullscreen button also doesn't create a space on the top of the mission control screen as it use to in the previous version. Is this this a glitch or is this the way its supposed to be?
