Hey,

Since the 2.2.0 update Vlc doesn't show the previews in Finder.

VLC never generated previews in the Finder, so this is not a related issue, sorry.

With the previous version (2.1.5) the Finder at least was showing the VLC icon when there was files associated with VLC (like in the picture below). But with the 2.2 update all files associated appears empty.

By the way why can't VLC generate previews in Finder like QuickTime does?

In this exemple I have on the left a .MKV associated with VLC that unfortunately appears empty, and on the right I have a .MP4 associated with QuickTime that shows a preview, why can't VLC do the same? Is it because Apple wants to keep this feature locked on their player or you guys didn't thought about that feature?

I wonder if it's because you have to open the file with VLC once and set VLC as the default software to open that program in order for the preview to show?

My bad, now Finder does shows the VLC icon when there is files associated with VLC, it was just a permission problem.

Anyway, does someone from VLC tell me why can't VLC show preview like QuickTime does? Is it because Apple wants to keep this feature locked on their player or you guys didn't thought about that feature?

We thought about that feature as well. But I think the problem was that APIs from Apple are insufficient.

Well something was generating previews in the Finder.

Dracula Untold, Earth To Echo and OUIJA were recorded with VLC 2.1.5. Man Of Steel was recorded with VLC 2.2.0.

Image

The first error I have encountered is that upon loading Man Of Steel, the playlist time shows 17:39:15 however the movie time shows (and is) 2:22:57 ...

Image

... then upon playing the movie, there is no video for the first 26 seconds, only audio (please note the movie time code is now 2:22:31) ...

Image

... then the audio drops out, the time code stops and the video begins (please note that the timecode is 2:22:30) ...

Image

... the video plays for what I assume is 26 seconds with no audio (please note that the timecode is still 2:22:30) ...

Image

... then, like magic, the audio comes back in and all is well. The video and audio is synced.

The Finder also has trouble resolving details of the file ... i.e. Dracula Untold's Dimensions are 720 x 480 and its Duration is 01:32:13 ...

Image

... However, Man Of Steel's Dimensions and Duration are blank.

I would like to note that VLC 2.2.0 does fix the bug that caused recording of long movies (approx. 2 hours) to drop the audio at the DVD layer switch.

So in the end, just VLCs recording feature is broken. This still has nothing to do with previews (apart from the fact that whoever generates the previews, cannot parse the broken file :-)).

Could you open a bug report, with steps how you created the files?

Bug report submitted ... Thank you.
